About Our Program:
Summer Laureate is a challenging and fast-paced program providing experiences for students who demonstrate creativity, inquisitiveness, and a desire for an academically rigorous experience in the summer. Guided by concepts such as change, structure, cause/effect, and systems, teachers will support students as they explore new STEM-related topics of study. This integrated approach to science, technology, engineering, and math instruction will emphasize critical and creative thinking, research skills, innovative technologies, and design thinking. Students will have the opportunity to self-select from areas of study for individual and/or group projects based on their interests, to demonstrate what they have learned in the summer experience. Some of the activities students K-5 will explore are hands-on science experimentation, green screen and stop motion filming, robotics, maker education, guest speakers, walking field trips, engineering design challenges, augmented and virtual reality, hands-on problem solving, and digital portfolio journaling and reflection. On the final day of the program, there will be a student-designed shared learning event which families are encouraged to attend.

Words of Student Advice
Words of advice from one student, to a robot, to other students about presenting at tomorrow’s Innovation Hour.
One of our 4th graders thought that other Summer Laureate students might have some anxiety about sharing their learning with the families that visit during tomorrow’s Innovation Hour so he did something about it. He programmed a Sphero robot to offer relaxing words of reassurance and cope with their nerves.

Innovation Hour – Session 2 – This Friday
Everyone is invited to Summer Laureate’s student-led Innovation Hour at McKinley Elementary School this Friday, August 2nd from 10:30 – 11:30.
Session 2: Mid Program Update on Seesaw
Don’t forget to sign up for your son/daughter’s personal online digital portfolio on Seesaw. Once you create a Family Account you will receive information from the classroom, including teacher announcements and your child’s posts. Parent invitations with directions on how to sign into the portfolios were sent home both on Monday and again on Friday. Seesaw can be accessed on any mobile device or computer. It will translate announcements into over 50 languages depending on what language your device is set to.
A mid-program update was posted in each portfolio from your child’s teacher.
For more information about Seesaw digital portfolios visit this site: https://web.seesaw.me/parents
Session 1 Begins Monday, July 8
Please be sure to send your students on the first day with the Summer Laureate tag that you will receive in the mail sometime this month. This will help teachers know exactly how each student is getting home each day. Due the limited parking space at McKinley Elementary, we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE families to send their students to and from the program using the APS bus transportation.
You should receive a mailing in June with additional information about the program. This will also include a Grade Level Tag that your son/daughter can wear on the first day of the program. Please include dismissal information on this tag.
At the end of the first day…families can expect to see a First Day Letter and directions on how you can sign up for access to your child’s individual digital portfolio on Seesaw. This portfolio can be shared with up to ten family members and accessed on just about any device…including your cell phone with the Seesaw Family app. You will be able to send comments to your child about their work, offering them encouragement and connecting with their summer school experience. If you have questions about how to sign up for the portfolio AFTER you receive directions on the first day please contact Jacqueline Firster – jacqueline.firster@apsva.us
Our 2019 teachers are busy planning exciting STEM activities and guest speakers for the program. We are really looking forward to meeting your son/daughter and having a wonderful, STEM-rich experience!
See you soon!

Be on the look out for First Day Letters going home on Monday from your child’s classroom teacher. We will also be sending home information on how to access your child’s digital portfolio on Seesaw.
